The ambivalent relationship between mass communication and democratisation in the context of the EU integration process of South East Europea was the topic of this event:

The EU Integration of South East Europe Lots of South East European countries will - sooner or later - join the European Union. The requirements for an accession were and are the stability of political institutions, the rule of law and the implementation of democratic principles and human rights, related to both the state and society.

The media are playing a crucial role in the process of democratisation. Through their mode of selecting and their way of imparting certain issues the media are forming social developement. As the central source of information and as a cultural integrative system mass media can both contribute to the implementation of democratic principles within a society or it can complicate it.
